In glorious summer weather twenty-four match races could be sailed in round robins on the weekend of 8th/9th of June in 2013 at the lake Constance Match Race ACT III event ahead of Steckborn. After these direct sailing duels three teams (skipper Roger Stocker SUI, Joni Steinlein GER and Max Trippolt AUT) were tied in the lead. In the direct matches against each team Max Trippolt from Bregenz beat the Zurich team of Roger Stocker, while the team of students from Innotio 2 Sailing Club with Constance Skipper Joni Steinlein lost their match against the Zurich team Stocker. So the overall winner was youth team Bregenz (Max Trippolt) before Roger Stocker and team Innotio 2 from student sailing club Constance (Joni Steinlein) in third place.
In warm summer weather and light winds, the Youth Sailing Steckborn (http://www.jugendsegeln.ch/) with the support of the Youth Regatta development association (http://www.regattajugend.com/) performed an outstanding event with international participation. Eight Match Race teams from Holland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland had arrived, including two all-female teams.
The sailing course directly in front of the harbour pier of Steckborn and the hotel Feldbach allowed the viewers to follow the regatta close and a goodly number of spectators took advantage of this opportunity on the pier and in the garden of the hotel Feldbach.
The top-class number of participants showed match race sailing at a high level. The international referee team led by Miro Bjelajac was pleased with the fair competition, the good atmosphere and the great commitment of the young organizers of the Youth Sailing Steckborn on the water and on land.
On Friday afternoon, most teams used the opportunity of open training sessions to become familiar with local wind conditions and the blu26 boats (www.bluboats.com). On Saturday morning the first matches of the round robin started in light but fair wind conditions. In the round robin, each team sails once against each other. The top teams in the world ranking wanted to win immediately, of course. But even the less experienced young match race teams battled highly motivated and experienced a steep learning curve.
Sunday morning brought fresh westerly wind, and after a short briefing at 8 o’clock the boats immediately ran out and punctually at 9 o’clock the startup procedure for the first race of the day began. Again the beautiful west wind allowed twelve matches. The team of Roger Stocker, Joni Steinlein and Max Trippolt could benefit from their competition experience and all three won with the same score. In the direct encounter, the team of Max Trippolt was the stronger and won this year’s Lake Constance match race at Steckborn. Many thanks to the shore crew of youth sailing Steckborn that supplied the sailors and helpers with pasta and hamburgers, and especially to all the sponsors and supporters of this great event and especially the sailing clubs from Mammern, Salenstein, Romanshorn and Arbon for the provided Regatta material.
