Due to the great interest and numerous pre-registrations for the Youth Match Race European Championship at Lake Constance theEuropean Sailing Federation has increased the number of teams from 12 to 16 for the first time. Until the closing date at 15th of June 14 nations and 16 high-profile teams registered themselves for the participation in the European Championships – including the Youth European Champions of 2011 and 2012.
Felix Somm, spokesman for the organizing committee and president of the Swiss Youth Regatta Development Association, is pleased with the registration record and the very high level of performance of the registered teams. The top 4 teams are already among the top 100 teams in the world match race ranking of all ages.
Set as number 1 is the team Great Britain with skipper Mark Lees and a place 33 in the world ranking (ISAF). Mark Lees knows the Lake Constance and the young teams of Lake Constance already, because he confidently won Lake Constance ACT V/2012 Match Race in Altnau last autumn. After winning the silver medal in 2011 at the Youth European Championship he wants to take the title to the UK this year.
The team Italy with skipper Valerio Galati, who is world no. 52 and the Youth European Champion of 2011, has also ambitions for the European title. Valerio Galati and Mark Lees already met in 2011 in the final. Will this duel be repeated at Lake Constance? Also Guillaume Pirouelle (world ranking 136) from France, who won the European title in 2012 at Lake Ledo in Italy, wants to defend his title here at Lake Constance.
The Austrian team of skipper Max Trippolt (World Ranking 73), after they won the Austrian Match Racing Tour and ACT3 of the Lake Constance Series in Steckborn, and the young team Germany 2 with skipper Joni Steinlein (world ranking 85) belong also to the medal contenders. Both teams have international match race experience and they have already participated in European Championships. Now they want to sail on their home waters for the win.
On 25th of September the qualification regattas will start in the Bay of Constance. The teams in two groups of 8 will fight for a place in the quarter-finals. The top four teams per group will participate in the quarter-finals. In the quarter finals those teams will qualify for the semi-final and final, which will firstly defeat their opponents twice.
The Youth Match Race European Championship will be performed in cross-border cooperation between young people of the student sailing club Constance (SSCK), of the Youth Sailing Steckborn, young people of the Yacht Club Bregenz together with the Yacht Club Constance and the Youth Regatta Development Association from 24th to 28th of September 2013.
